Can I Just Get a Cleaning Without an Exam?

“Can I just get a cleaning without an exam?” On its face, it’s a reasonable question: if your teeth feel fine, you brush and floss regularly, and you’re simply hoping to stay on track, do you really need a dental exam before getting your teeth cleaned?

Here at Prickly Pear Dental Care, every cleaning begins with an exam by Dr. Flores. Of course, this is not because we just want to make your life more complicated! Instead, it’s because the exam is actually what allows us to understand what type of cleaning is safe, appropriate, and genuinely helpful for you.

Simply put, a “cleaning” is not exactly the same for every patient. For some people, a standard, preventive cleaning is truly all they need. For others, there may be signs of gum disease, deeper buildup below the gumline, bone loss, infection, or other concerns that cannot be fully evaluated without an exam. In these situations, doing a routine cleaning without first understanding the full picture could mean missing something important or providing care that does not match the patient’s needs.

X-rays are also an important part of most new-patient exams. They allow Dr. Flores to see areas that cannot be evaluated by sight alone, including between the teeth, beneath existing dental work, around the roots, and in the supporting bone. Stated simply, X-rays help us to make informed recommendations instead of having to guess what’s best for our patients without a full understanding of their oral-health needs.

The good news is that an exam does not necessarily mean delaying your cleaning. In many cases, we’re able to complete a new patient’s exam, appropriate X-rays, and standard cleaning during the same appointment. However, if Dr. Flores finds that a different type of cleaning is needed, such as treatment for gum disease, she will clearly explain what she sees, answer any questions, and thoroughly discuss the recommended next steps. Of course, it’s then up to the patient to fully consent before moving forward.

We also understand that many patients worry about how a simple exam can seemingly turn into a long list of treatments that they were not expecting. And to be fair, this is a very reasonable concern! Dentistry has seen more and more extremely low-cost new-patient offers in recent years, and these visits can sometimes leave patients feeling less like they received a careful diagnosis and more like they were ultimately brought in for a high-pressure sales presentation. Here at Prickly Pear Dental Care, this is exactly the kind of experience that we are trying to be different from. Our goal is never to pressure you into treatment. We perform exams on all new patients so that we can offer honest information about their oral health, help them to understand their options, and support them in making the best decisions possible based on their unique needs and circumstances.

For many patients with dental insurance, comprehensive exams, appropriate X-rays, and standard cleanings may be covered at or near 100%. Every plan is different, so before your new-patient visit, our friendly, experienced team will verify your benefits and help you to understand what your specific plan can be expected to cover. And for patients without insurance, we’re happy to share that our affordable and convenient in-house membership plan includes two standard cleanings per year.

So, can you just get a cleaning without an exam? At our office, we begin with the exam first—not to inconvenience you, but because it’s a vital part of providing safe, personalized, high-quality dental care. If you’re due for a cleaning or have more questions about your first visit, our team is always happy to walk you through what to expect.
